Dress for success

I am SO excited! For the past couple of weeks, I've been putting together a website to launch my new venture, Exquisite Design Events, an event planning business. For years, I've been:

  • Planning events for every job I've held,

  • Taken care of church programming

  • Holding birthday parties for loved ones, and

  • Working on family reunion committees.

Why not turn my experience and skills into a profitable venture?

This evening, I'm going to an entrepreneur workshop specifically for women. How empowering is THAT? The outfit I've chosen to wear is pictured. Click on the dress picture or here for more information (sorry, the shoes are no longer available at Payless - but they have many other cute selections - and the other accessories were gifts). Neutrals seem to work best when you don't know your audience. There are so many colors that are now considered "neutral." I figured this would be perfect for a (hopefully) mild southern evening event. Especially one with such great networking possibilities!

Whether you you have a job interview, attending a workshop or conference, or simply going to Walmart, dress in the manner you want to be remembered. When I was growing up, many teenage girls thought it was "cool" to go places with rollers/curlers in their hair and/or slippers on their feet. I tried to do this once. On my way to the door, my (old-fashioned) parents stopped me dead in my tracks. They told me in no uncertain terms was I to leave THEIR house looking as if I had no home! My mother pulled me aside and told me, "You never know where your future is waiting." For a few years, I thought she meant my husband as my future. She later explained "your future" could be a future teacher, business associate, or financier. Since that day, I've tried to be conscious of how I dress. Not only because of who I may meet, but because I can be one who influences - an example of a successful female professional.

Dress to be successful. Yes, do so to be a mentor. For that little girl or young lady who looks up to you. Do it for your daughter, who wants to follow in your footsteps. Do it for your mother, to make her proud and follow in HER footsteps. Most of all, however, do it for yourself. Have a sense of pride in the woman you are and what you've accomplished.

Rise, and continue your journey.
